The arrival of Timo Werner in the Chelsea squad did not necessarily make Olivier Giroud nervous. Instead, he actually feels more confident that he will be an important part of Frank Lampard’s squad next season.
Chelsea is very active in the transfer market this summer, they managed to bring in six new players, including Thiago Silva, Ben Chilwell, Hakim Ziyech, Kai Havertz, Malang Sarr and Timo Werner.
The last name is believed to be the spearhead of the Blues next season. Naturally, the young German striker has performed nicely with RB Leipzig in the last few seasons. Roughly speaking, Timo Werner is a guaranteed goal for Frank Lampard’s squad next season.
The arrival of Werner itself has made many believe that Giroud’s playing minutes will decrease next season, especially since Chelsea still have Tammy Abraham, who will stay.
Regarding the situation, the French player confirmed that he was ready to compete with Werner for a place in the first team. Now, he remains in that stance, even though he has not spoken to coach Frank Lampard.
What is clear, Giroud feels that the arrival of Timo Werner has tightened competition in the first team, which is good for Chelsea itself.
“I haven’t spoken to Lampard yet. One thing is certain: the competition will lead us to the top. A great club should have a number of options in every position.”
“We want to compete for the title and I’m still here. I closed the season well and I proved that the coach can count on me.” Giroud said quoted from Goal international.
Although both play as strikers, Giroud feels that he and Werner have different playing styles. If a German player is in charge of scoring goals, Giroud can indeed create opportunities for him.
So, the former Arsenal hope is that he can still get minutes to play next season.
“Werner has a different style from me, I hope to get minutes to play,” added Giroud.
It seems that Giroud will still be relied upon, especially considering the fact that Chelsea will participate in many competitions next season.
