The Croatian and Real Madrid National Team midfielder, Luka Modric, finally ended the dominance of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo, who have survived for the past 10 years by winning Ballon d’Or. Yes, this 31-year-old player won the Ballon d’Or title this year, completing the achievements of the individuals he previously won, such as UEFA Best Player and FIFA Best Player of the Year 2018.
The Brazilian legend, Ricardo Kaka is the last player to win the Ballon d’Or title before those two aliens, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo who always dominated this award in the last decade in a row. Each of these players has won 5 most prestigious trophies among the world’s best players. Now, it is Luka Modric’s turn to succeed in ending the dominance of the two players, after delivering Real Madrid to embrace the 2017/18 European Champions League trophy, and delivering the Croatian National Team for the first time to step into the 2018 World Cup final.
In his short speech after receiving this award, the former Tottenham Hotspur player claimed to be very proud, the special feeling he felt, and his struggles over the years were at the highest level.
“It’s a special feeling, I’m happy, proud and it’s an honor. There is tremendous emotion right now. I just want to thank those who helped me be here tonight, I thank my team mates, my coaches, staff and Real Madrid, all of them working there, coaches and team-mates on the national team , those who chose me and my family, which made me grow like now. ”
“Always having dreams, I want to play in a big club, win titles. Ballon D’Or is what I dreamed of as a child, it’s an honor to win it tonight. Very happy to be here, to be among these [best] players. I try to get used to being part of the group of the best players, who have won the Ballon d’Or in history. It’s amazing to be a part of this group,” said Modric when he received the award.
Previously, Modric also won the award as UEFA’s best European player, and FIFA’s world’s best player. In his victory at Ballon d’Or, Modric managed to beat Cristiano Ronaldo and Antoine Griezmann, who finished 2nd and 3rd respectively.
