After three years, the Argentina mega star, Lionel Messi has finally won the world’s best player award this year, or what we know as Ballon d’Or. In fact, this is the 6th Ballon d’Or won by this Barcelona player, since the first time in 2009.
Lionel Messi was announced as the winner of the Ballon d’Or this year at the gala evening event, which was held Tuesday morning (03/12). He defeated a number of names that were called the strongest candidates besides him, such as Liverpool defender, Virgil Van Dijk and Juventus striker, Cristiano Ronaldo.
Of course, Lionel Messi’s success won the Ballon D’Or this year, because of his performance at a very good individual level. He repeatedly became the decisive figure of Barcelona’s victory in various events. The result, Messi successfully presented the La Liga title last season. In addition, he also scored 34 goals in the Spanish La Liga event.
With a total of 6 Ballon d’Or that have been won, it means that clearly Messi is one of the best players in history. As is known, he now holds the status of winning the most Ballon d’Or trophies in football history. However, this fact does not necessarily make La Pulga feel satisfied. He claimed to want to be even better from a personal level.
“I love to live like this, both from a personal level or sports. I try every time to develop myself. I believe that I can always be better. This award always feels special, but the most important thing is collective success,” said Messi to L’Equipe.
For your information, Lionel Messi has indeed collected 6 Ballon d’Or in his career so far, no other player has won that many Ballon d’Or in the history of football. The closest is his rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, who has collected five trophies.
Messi himself first won it in 2009, then continued in 2010, 2011, 2012, 2015 and most recently in 2019. In this year’s competition, Cristiano Ronaldo only finished at third place.
