Rio Ferdinand, the former Manchester United mainstay defender, was also disappointed at the appearance of Donny Van De Beek, and even questioned the Red Devils management decision to buy the midfielder last summer.
As is known, Donny Van De Beek previously played for Ajax Amsterdam, he is one of the golden generation of the Dutch club along with Frenkie De Jong, De Ligt to Hakim Ziyech.
In the 2018/19 campaign, these talented young players successfully brought Ajax to the semifinals of the European Champions League.
As a result, some of them were “picked” by a number of European giants, such as Frenkie De Jong who joined Barcelona, De Ligt who was bought by Juventus, and Hakim Ziyech who was recruited by Chelsea.
Meanwhile, Donny Van De Beek himself just left Ajax in the summer of 2020 to join Manchester United. Of course, the hope is that the midfielder can look as good as when he was defending Ajax.
Unfortunately, so far Van De Beek is still far from achieving public expectations, due to the fact that he has only played two matches as a Starter in the Premier League.
“It is clear that United would prefer someone who can fill a central midfielder behind Bruno,”
“I understand, given that there has to be someone capable of protecting a central defender and that is not one of Van de Beek’s strengths. But that raises a question: why buy him?” said Ferdinand in Vibe with FIVE.
In fact, Ferdinand is one of the parties who has the belief that Van De Beek will be one of the players that the Red Devils can rely on.
“He was very impressive when he made a stab into the penalty box, as well as the way he played deeper and kept the ball, kept the game going.”
“I think he can add value to this team, of course. He is a person who can score goals, he has a role in goals. When he comes into the box, he knows how to get the ball into the net,” added Ferdinand.
