Senegal is at the FIFA world cup for a 2nd time. They are the second African nation to enter the quarter finals in 2002, when Japan and Korea both hosted the world cup. Their coach, Aliou Cisse, captained the team in their earlier world cup show and then started coaching from March 2015.
The goal keepers Khadim NDiaye from Horoya, Abdoulaye Diallo from Rennes, Pape Seydou NDiaye from Niarry Tally and SPAL’s Alfred Gomis are the probable ones.
The defenders are Fallou Diagne from Metz, Papy Djilobodji from Dijon, Lamine Gassama from Alanyaspor, Kalidou Koulibaly from Napoli, Youssouf Sabaly from Bordeaux, Salif Sane from Hannover 96, Pape Souare from Crystal Palace and Moussa Wague from Eupen.
The midfielders include Idrissa Gueye from Everton, Cheikhou Kouyate from West Ham United, who is also the captain of the side, Alfred NDiaye from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Badou NDiaye from Stoke City, Cheikh NDoye from Birmingham City and Henry Saivet from Sivasspor.
The key players are the forwards of the team. They have a couple of few good players who are capable of turning the tables. Keita Balde from Monaco, Sadio Mane from Liverpool, MBaye Niang from Torino, Diafra Sakho from Rennes, Ismaila Sarr also from Rennes and Moussa Sow from Bursaspor.
Sadio Mane is the stalwart of the team and a key player. The young player is good at scoring goals with pace. He is also popular for his trademark dance celebration. Another young rising star is Keita Balde. This world cup will provide him with the perfect platform to showcase his talent. His career already looks bright and he is just 23.
The defender, Napoli’s Koulibaly, is also a respectable player in the national team. He plays at the centre back position. His physically strong body is well known for aerial prowess and versatility. He controls the defense along with Mane who attacks.
Gueye and Kouyate are the spine of the team, providing the much-needed support. Debutante Mbaye Niang has 3 caps for Senegal under his hat and should be good to watch out for along with others.
The team of Senegal is referred to as the ‘Lions of Teranga’ but till now their wins are not convincing enough. They have to work hard to prove their prowess.
Senegal is placed in Group H where they play Poland, Japan and Colombia, in that order. They are the African country who can cause some upsets in Russia.
