What Barcelona fans have been waiting for finally happened, the election of the New President, where the most votes were won by the former club president, Joan Laporta.
As is known, the coaching chair at Barcelona was indeed empty following Josep Maria Bartomeu’s decision to resign from his position at the end of 2020.
According to the rumors, Bartomeu and his board of directors had hired buzzers to attack players who disagreed with his decisions, including captains Lionel Messi and Gerard Pique.
This issue was indeed denied by Barcelona, but not long ago Bartomeu Cs was arrested by the Catalan police because he was proven to have done what was accused, otherwise known as Barcagate.
Preparations for the Presidential election have been carried out since Bartomeu stepped down, there are three candidates who have stepped forward, including Joan Laporta, Victor Font and Toni Freixa. Voting was also carried out by all club members on last Sunday, March 7, 2021.
As a result, Joan Laporta, who had previously served as Club President, was elected by pocketing the most votes.
Laporta won 54.28 percent of the total number of votes contested. Laporta pocketed 30,184 votes. He is far superior to the two competitors. Voting itself was carried out by post and six other places.
For information, Joan Laporta served as President of Barcelona from 2003 to 2010. That is, this will be his second term as president of the Catalan Giants.
But of course, the tough task awaits Joan Laporta as Barcelona president. It is not only about the club’s financial condition that is not good enough, but also about Lionel Messi’s future.
Lionel Messi’s contract at the Camp Nou only remains until the end of the 2021 season, while until now there has been no sign of a contract extension agreed upon by the Argentine superstar.
Some time ago, Laporta was very optimistic that Messi could stay at Barcelona, he even believed that only he of the three candidates for club president could make La Pulga survive.
