Can Iceland Edge Past Nigeria?
The Group D in FIFA World Cup 2018 is being called as the ‘The group of death’ in lighter terms. True to its name, the group has tough competition among the participants. The way Iceland qualified for the tournament is nothing short of an awesome display. Qualifying for the Euro 2016, coming out of the group stage, giving a shocker to England to reach the quarter final, and they would surely be seeing to finish off the remaining business with Nigeria and Croatia. The match between them and the Super Eagles is scheduled on June 22 at the Volvograd arena and the Icelandic team would be hoping to pick up 3 points here.
Team Nigeria is not easy opponent and things are not going to be easy for both the teams. They too qualified without much pains and are eager to take on their rivals. The two teams have never faced each other prior to this tie up, can this be an advantage or a disadvantage, we have to wait and watch.
Iceland beat Croatia at the qualifier and football fans will be able to see Heimir Hallgrimsson’s boys in this tournament. He led his team to 7 wins out of 10 games played and they also grabbed a point in Ukraine.
On the other hand, Nigeria qualified with a breeze. They lost only once and won on 4 different occasions. Both the teams are worthy of a knockout stage competition and they both can make it to the round of 16.
The match is on European soil and maybe it is going to affect the players from the Scandinavian nation. They seem to make a cut for a win, with Nigeria close behind them.
A couple of things to remember are that Nigeria has not given more than one goal in their qualifiers and that Icelanders do not have the privilege of great goal scorers.
Nigeria will definitely come close to earning 3 points but may not be able to achieve that with the highly organized and disciplined squad of Iceland playing a spoil sport. Both the teams are aware that they have to utilize this match in a good way to entertain any chances of reaching the final 16. Nigeria has attacking players and Iceland has an impressive back line. This should most probably result in a 1-1 score outcome.
Bookmakers are backing for a low score affair at this face off.
