Ahead of the quarter-finals, two Atletico players tests positive for Covid-19
A surprising news came from the Spanish La Liga giants, Atletico Madrid. Ahead of fighting RB Leipzig in the quarter-finals of the European Champions League, two of their players tested positive for Covid-19.
The team directed by Diego Simeone is indeed preparing to face RB Leipzig at Estadio Jose Alvalade, Portugal, Friday (14/8/2020).
Starting from the quarter-finals, both the European Champions League and the Europa League will only be held in one leg. The reason is that the world is currently facing the Coronavirus pandemic.
Atletico Madrid itself managed to advance to the last eight after defeating defending champions, Liverpool in two legs of the last 16.
Now they are also preparing to face RB Leipzig, which previously eliminated Tottenham Hotspur.
However, ahead of the match, Atletico Madrid released a statement saying that two of its players had contracted Covid-19.
So far, they did not mention who are the two players were, which is clear that they are currently undergoing independent isolation.
“All members of the first team and entourage leaving for Lisbon took the PCR test at Ciudad Deportiva de Majadahonda as required by UEFA protocol for the Champions League quarter-finals,”
“Among the results known today, two players were positive.”
“The two players have already isolated themselves in their respective homes, and the results were immediately notified to the health authorities of Spain and Portugal, UEFA, the Spanish Football Federation, the Portuguese Federation and the higher sports boards,” said a club statement, quoted by Goal.
Meanwhile, the findings of positive cases in the Atletico Madrid squad have made the club have to postpone the training session. As such, they plan to submit match schedule changes to UEFA.
“The club will coordinate a new schedule with UEFA and a new plan will be announced to the public. We ask for the utmost respect for maintaining identity in these two positive cases,” concluded a club statement.
Meanwhile, the last match played by Atletico Madrid was the last match of the Spanish La Liga against Real Sociedad on 20 July. Tiil now they have not appeared in another match.
