According to Wenger, Thiago Alcantara has destroyed Liverpool’s game
Former Arsenal legendary coach Arsene Wenger also commented on Liverpool’s current situation which seems to have decreased in terms of performance. Interestingly, the man from France considers Thiago Alcantara as a “destroyer” of Liverpool’s aggressiveness.
As is known, Thiago Alcantara did join Liverpool in the transfer market last summer. Obviously, seeing Thiago who won the Treble Winner with Bayern Munich previously, the expectation of the midfielder was high.
It’s just that, the facts that appear on the field show that Thiago has not been able to make the maximum contribution to the Marseyside team so far. This situation also made him the target of criticism.
Meanwhile, Liverpool itself has seen a decline in performance since the start of this season. They even swallowed three successive defeats in the Premier League before winning over RB Leipzig in the Champions League last midweek.
A series of poor results in the League have made Jurgen Klopp’s men further away from the top of the standings.
Coach Jurgen Klopp himself had said that this situation was due to some of his mainstay players who were sidelined due to injuries such as Virgil Van Dijk.
However, Arsene Wenger has a different view, according to which the presence of Thiago Alcantara in the Liverpool squad actually reduces their midfield aggressiveness.
“Thiago Alcantara, for me, shows a problem for a manager. Liverpool are very hungry and aggressive in midfield, when you are a manager you think you want to make the team better and you take on the technical players,”
“When you sign a technical player you lose the aggression in midfield and you destroy a little bit of the strength in midfield that Liverpool had before,” Wenger told beIN Sports.
In conclusion, Arsene Wenger considers that the club’s decision to recruit Thiago Alcantara was not completely done, because it indirectly sacrificed the team’s midfield.
“They obviously had less capacity today to win the ball back and they suffered a little more. Sometimes when you want to improve the team you take something away from it.” said Wenger.
